Jharkhand set for crucial floor test today, ruling coalition MLAs back in Ranchi

Jharkhand is set to witness a pivotal trust vote today, February 5. The newly sworn-in Chief Minister Champai Soren will lead his government in seeking a vote of confidence in the state assembly.

This comes after the arrest of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate on charges related to a money laundering case. Despite his arrest, a special PMLA court granted Hemant Soren permission to attend the trust vote, recognising his right as a member of the assembly.

Here's all you need to know going into the Jharkhand floor test:

  • Champai Soren assumed the role of Chief Minister following the arrest of Hemant Soren, who was implicated in a money laundering case linked to a land fraud case.

  • The trust vote is essential for the Champai Soren-led government to demonstrate that it commands the majority support of the state legislators.

  • The ruling coalition comprises the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), with a total of 47 MLAs in the 81-member assembly. They also have the external support of one CPI(ML)(L) legislator.

     

  • The opposition includes the BJP with 25 MLAs, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) party with three MLAs, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and CPI(ML)(L) with one member each, and three Independents.

  • Ahead of the trust vote, 37 MLAs from the ruling coalition returned from Hyderabad, where they were reportedly safeguarded against poaching attempts by the opposit
